This is the story of my great-grandfather's diary that he kept in 1847. On April 7th of that year, he left Winter Quarters, Nebraska in the first company of Mormon pioneers that was led west by Brigham Young. After years of religious persecution, their inspired destination was the "tops of the mountains". Hope was that they would find a place where they could be left alone to worship God as they pleased in this new land of opportunity and freedom of religion. -- Roeann Harper
