Norton Jacob's journal:
"Saturday, 8th A white frost this morning but bids fain to be a warm day [ ] last night I was on guard with my Ten in the fore part of the evening Br Benson called for the Guard & said he thought he saw an Indian coming across the slough but it probably was some wild animal—started ½ past 9 & traveled through one continued herd of Buffalo for 8 miles & halted to bate in a revine bottom next to the river Lat 40° 58' 14" where our teams could get a little grass for the whole face of the earth is eat up here by the thousands upon thousands of Buffalo [ ] Porter Rockwell shot one right by the side of our path [ ] indeed wee had to stop to let them take their own time to get out of our way [ ] if the Horsemen would chace them they'd turn round & look at them as soon as they stoped [ ] traveled 5 miles & came to a place where the river runns close into the Bluff here we camped in a barren sandy plain [ ] two Buffaloes were Killed Just at dusk"
