"a slight shower of rain about day-break after which it cleared off warm till in
the afternoon when it began to blow cold from the west [ ] during this day we were never out of sight of large herds of Bufalos besides number of Elk and antilope"

They are near Cozad, Nebraska now in Lincoln County. 

They are having trouble finding enough grass for the animals because of overgrazing by buffalo. 

They are traveling on the north side of the river to avoid other travelers as they were very leery of strangers.
