"Traveled about 26 miles"
************
The day of the 18th was interesting. In "111 Days to Zion" it tells how Brigham admonished the group for too much killing of food. Brigham says, ... "Some members of the company have left meat on the ground and would not use it because it was not a hind quarter. God has given us a commandment that we should not waste meat nor take life unless it is needful." He said that there were some who......"would kill all the game within 100 miles if they could without one thought of who created it or formed those great pastures for the wild animals to feed it..." and ... "Some men will shoot as much as 30 times at a rabbit if they did not kill it and are continually wasting their ammunition. But when they have used all they have got, they may have the pleasure of carrying their empty guns to the mountains...".
He also "turned his wrath" onto the mounted horsemen saying that ..."only HC Kimball, W. Woodruff, and ET Benson take the trouble to scout out a good road for the wagons during the day [where] all others seem care about is to wait until their breakfast is coked for them and when they have eaten it, they mount their horses and scatter away." To say the company was chastened for the day is an understatement.
A rattlesnake also met his demise this day when Brigham's horse stepped on it and it coiled and struck nearly missing Thomas Woolsey. John Higbee then shot it's head off and he threw it into the creek. Then Brigham named the creek Rattlesnake Creek. Other perspectives of the day:
Wilford Woodruff:
