"still cold with some rain"
********
I guess we could pretend that this woman was one of the three women on this trip....Ellen Saunders Kimball or Harried Decker Young or Clara Decker Young? Woman's job?
Today found much good grass for the animals and good supplies of buffalo, deer, antelope, geese and ducks for the hunters to bring back to the camp. That being said, there were sand hills to be crossed which made the travel very difficult for the pioneers and the oxen. They were in Sioux territory, and they found that a bit fearful. Though food was plentiful, fuel for fires was not, but dried buffalo chips were everywhere and that made a good fire.
Norton Jacob journal of the day:
"Satterday 15th [ ] The prospect for warm grass growing weather this morning is sti... not verry flattering [ ] a high North wind wintry cloudy & cold spatering rain at 8 oclock—our fuel will soon get so much soaked that we shall not be in a verry good condition to dry ourselves when we get wet. The Buffalo dung is our principal resource with what little wood can be picked up along the banks of the river principaly Pine & cedar [ ] the Buffalo Chips when dry burns verry well especialy if one had a grate to burn it on and the supply is most abundant—At 9 A.M. moved on over around among Sand Knobs for 2½ miles when we returned to the Bottoms at the confluence of a beautiful clear creek with the river where the grass is more abundant than at anny place we have seen so as there is a drisling rain we have turned out our Teams to bate. This morning before we started some of the men went out with the cutter & brought in a four year old Bull that Luk Johnson & Br Glines shot last evening which is fine fat meat [ ] the other one that was Killed was so far out into the sand Knobs that it was throught they could not find it—the Bottoms are narrow on the river here with and a sucesion of Sand Hills extending far back into the interior—Half past 12 oclock the rain having ceased we moved on 4 miles & camped [ ] in the evening the Hunters brought in another Bull [ ] they report that there is no cows among the herds here"
