The area around Hersey, Nebraska then was very grassy. This day they rested on the trail a while to let the animals eat. And while resting, one of the men, Willard Richards, wrote a note about the trail thus far secured it onto a crevice in a post for the next train with the message...."Open this and you will find a letter".
At times on the Mormon Trail, it coincided with the Oregon Trail. Between both companies, it meant a lot of traffic on these grounds whose wagon ruts are still visible. I find the pioneer wagon wheel ruts with much fascination and there are places throughout Nebraska and Wyoming where you can still see them clearly. Eventually, when we get into Utah and come into the valley, the original Mormon Trail can also be seen and hiked. This is an interesting site about wagon ruts.
Many thanks to Ken Ziegenbein for giving me permission to post his photos he took of the wagon ruts in Nebraska in 2004. Aren't they great? Thanks, Ken!
