"the next 4 days was spent in getting across the river which we found difficult crossing [ ] we swam some wagons but crossed the most on a raft and took our goods over in the leather boat [ ] we also crossed some of the Oregon emigrants in the same way"
****************
The 'leather boat' spoken of was a sole-leather skiff capable of carrying 1800 pounds. The raft mentioned was a flat-boat hired from a Frenchman named James Bordeaux who was in charge at Fort Laramie. (Joseph F. Smith) They stopped for Sunday and Brigham and others spoke to them. It was a day of rest for them and for their animals.
Norton Jacob journal:
"Sunday 13th [ ] Prayer meeting at 8 oclock after being opened Br. H. C. Kimbal made some remarks concerning the necessity of our becoming one. Said it was natural for men to seek to go away by themselves & have a seperate interest & said that on this principle we cannot gather the House of Israel in six million probations [ ] pursue this course & you will never advance one step & in the morning of the reserection you will find yourselves Just where you are now [ ] the mission we are now engaged in is the greatest I have ever seen since I been in the Church & how do you regard it why it is of more importance Br Crow than to stay her & ferry over these Gentiles if you could get 50 dollars a waggon [ ] these are little things but it is necessary for us to be passive like clay in the hands of the Potter that we may become a vesel of honor then we shall come in honorable mansions for the magnificence of the ma will be in proportion honor of the vessel [ ] when men walk in the Light & have the Spirit of God they view themselves to be the least for they are enabled by the light to disern the small motes & their own imperfections are the more manifest where when a man is in the dark he can see nothing as it is & himself appears to be the largest object within the Scope of his vision. Br Brigham then remarked when we are passive in the hands of the Lord we can receive Knowlidge but no truth can be written upon the tablet of the Heart unless that which has been written is first erased [ ] when are exalted even to receive a fulness does it follow that we canot anny more if we understand what will save us to day that is a fulness of knowledge but that will not be all that is necessary for tommorrow [ ] Do men know how to serve the Lord? will you understand it if I tell you? It is to do that which will result in the greatest good [ ] in order to do this it is necessary for you to know & understand the result of all your actions. The Gospel of Christ is the perfect Law of Liberty. What say you, be subject Law is this Liberty? Yes, it is Liberty. To increase without end but not to dethrone the Lord nor subvert his Laws which The liberty of the Devel is to injure your Brother & try to run at large & kill every thing you can whether you want it or not. Well, now you are not at Liberty do such things & thereby bring evil upon this camp but anny one is at liberty to withdraw from us or go back or go with thos men who are going on ahead of us or go & live with the Indians but if you stay here you must obey the Laws which are necessary for our preservation and for the building up the Kingdom of God. At a certain To the name of Jesus every shall bow & reverence must be paid to his Laws whether men are willing serve him in all things or not. They may serve the Devil and them bring them into bondage if they choose it but to the name God they must bow the Knee & acknowledge his glory. After meeting the officers were called to the Presidents Waggo
